The cnc milling decision
Agree a practical inspection method for pocket and hole relationships. Possession of a height gauge does not establish capability for every geometric callout.
This guidance concerns brackets, plates, pockets and prismatic OEM components. For this subject, 3-axis milling is available on the Ace Micromatics FANUC VMC; multi-face access and complex undercuts require a drawing review, not an assumed 5-axis capability. The quotation and approval plan should reflect the actual component rather than a general claim about precision manufacturing.

Make inspection requirements explicit
Assign feature identifiers to the critical dimensions and relate them to a controlled drawing revision. Agree whether the report covers first samples, selected batch pieces or every piece where specifically required. Frequency and scope should follow the buyer's acceptance needs rather than being assumed from the phrase inspected parts.
Identify measurement methods, support conditions and any conditioning requirement. Ask how an inaccessible feature will be verified. An equipment list is useful context but does not prove that every drawing callout can be checked with that equipment.
- 02 / 05
Define the response to a failed check
Agree what happens when a measurement is outside its limit: segregation, recheck, buyer notification and controlled disposition. Keep reworked parts identifiable until they pass the agreed reinspection. A supplier should not erase the history by reporting only the last acceptable measurement.
Link material identity, part number, revision and batch reference to the report. Retain sample results with the approval record so receiving inspection uses the same interpretation. For functional, pressure or electrical testing, explicitly define responsibility and confirm availability instead of treating dimensional inspection as a substitute.

Decision record for the purchasing file
Subject: CNC Milling. Decision: Request a drawing-linked plan identifying critical features, measurement methods, acceptance limits and required report scope before production starts. Part-specific question: Agree a practical inspection method for pocket and hole relationships. Possession of a height gauge does not establish capability for every geometric callout. Write the supplier's response beside that question and have the authorised engineer approve any change affecting the mating interface. Keep unresolved items visible rather than treating a received quotation as evidence that all technical requirements have been accepted.
Record the material decision using this criterion: plate or billet grade, residual stress and final section thickness influence machining and stability. Record the feature review against pocket corner radii, depth-to-width ratio, thin walls and access to features on more than one face. Finally, record the agreed verification method for face heights with a height gauge and surface plate, dimensions with calipers or micrometers, and datum-related checks agreed before ordering. These three entries connect the commercial offer to the physical component the buyer intends to accept. If any answer changes after the quote, confirm the effect on price, inspection and delivery before releasing the purchase order.
Use a simple outcome for each entry: accepted as specified, clarification required or engineer-approved alternative. Name the drawing revision and approval reference in the purchasing record. Do not mark a provisional suggestion as accepted until the responsible person has reviewed it. This leaves a clear basis for comparing the first delivered sample with the offer and for deciding what must be repeated on the next batch.

Part-specific review before release
Material review: plate or billet grade, residual stress and final section thickness influence machining and stability. State the agreed designation and required evidence in the purchase specification. Where service performance depends on the material, the design authority must confirm suitability rather than delegating that decision to a generic machining quotation.
Geometry review: focus on pocket corner radii, depth-to-width ratio, thin walls and access to features on more than one face. Inspection should address face heights with a height gauge and surface plate, dimensions with calipers or micrometers, and datum-related checks agreed before ordering. Resolve any feature outside the confirmed measurement scope before ordering, and use the same drawing interpretation for the sample, production report and receiving checks.
Delivery protection: separate finished faces, support thin plates and keep grit away from locating surfaces. Identify the part and revision on the delivered batch. Damage, a material mix-up or an unclear report can prevent an otherwise dimensionally acceptable part from entering the assembly.

Send a drawing for a scoped quotation
For a review of cnc milling, include STEP model, dimensioned drawing, pocket depths, corner radii, datum faces and critical hole relationships. Upload a dimensioned PDF with its revision and a matching STEP or IGES model when available. Add sample and batch quantities, required documents and the delivery destination so the offer can separate technical scope from logistics.
Precision Machining India holds ISO 9001:2015 and uses LMW, Jyoti and Ace Micromatics turning centres, a 3-axis Ace Micromatics FANUC VMC and Mitutoyo inspection instruments. This does not imply AS9100, ISO 13485 or 5-axis capability. Any additional process or specialised test must be reviewed and confirmed separately. Request an NDA before sharing confidential drawings when needed, then use the quotation form to begin the part-specific discussion.
Frequently asked questions
Get a quote in 24hWhat inspection evidence should buyers request for cnc milling?
Request a drawing-linked plan identifying critical features, measurement methods, acceptance limits and required report scope before production starts. Agree a practical inspection method for pocket and hole relationships. Possession of a height gauge does not establish capability for every geometric callout.
What information is needed to review my cnc milling part?
Provide STEP model, dimensioned drawing, pocket depths, corner radii, datum faces and critical hole relationships, the controlled PDF drawing, matching model, material designation, quantities and delivery destination. Capability and pricing are confirmed against the actual part.
Does machining approval establish final application suitability?
No. Drawing conformity and machining scope must be distinguished from buyer-defined assembly, service and regulatory approval. Confirm plate or billet grade, residual stress and final section thickness influence machining and stability and any required testing before release.
