Small-Batch CNC Machining: Comparing Quotes for 1, 10, 50 and 100 Parts
Request quotations for 1, 10, 50 and 100 parts using the same drawing revision, material, finish and inspection scope. Separate batch-level charges from per-part costs and compare the total cash commitment. These quantities are comparison examples, not published prices, accepted minimums or guaranteed savings.

Keep every quotation technically comparable
A cheaper quote is not a useful saving if it uses another grade, omits a finishing process or measures fewer critical features. Issue one RFQ package with the same PDF drawing, STEP or IGES model, material condition and revision to each supplier. Include the delivery address and identify whether packing and freight are included.
Ask suppliers to state exclusions and assumptions beside the quantity breaks. Compare first-article inspection separately from routine batch inspection. If you permit an alternative material or relaxed tolerance, request it as a clearly identified option rather than allowing a silent substitution in the base price. This protects both the purchasing comparison and engineering approval.

One part: validate before scaling
A single part may be intended for fit evaluation, testing or an urgent replacement. Define that purpose because a fit sample and a final production component can require different inspection and documentation. A successful dimensional inspection does not by itself prove performance in the assembly. Arrange the functional test with the responsible engineer.
Programming, workholding preparation and material procurement may still be needed for a single piece. Ask whether the quotation includes those activities and whether any preparation can be reused on a repeat order. Do not assume ownership of fixtures or programs, or automatic reuse discounts: have the supplier confirm the commercial arrangement.

Ten parts: separate pilot approval from production
A small pilot batch can reveal assembly variation that a single sample would miss. Decide how many pieces are for testing, reference retention and first-article approval. If destructive tests consume parts, include them in the requested quantity rather than discovering a shortage after delivery. Ask whether the pilot uses the intended production material and process.
Document what must be approved before another order is placed. This may include critical dimensions, identification, handling and inspection records. A pilot is most useful when its acceptance criteria are written beforehand. It should not become an open-ended request for free design development or an implied commitment to future volume.

Fifty and one hundred parts: compare inventory exposure
At larger quantities, ask how stock purchases, repeated machining and inspection affect the offer. Some batch-level costs may be spread across more units, but the result depends on geometry, material availability and the supplier's process. There is no universal percentage reduction between fifty and one hundred parts.
Compare total expenditure, storage, revision risk and expected consumption alongside unit price. Buying extra components that become obsolete after a drawing change can erase an apparent saving. If scheduled releases are proposed, clarify who owns the stock, when payment is due and which delivery dates are committed. An annual forecast is not the same as a firm order.

Use a quote comparison record
For each quantity, record the batch total, unit price, setup charge, material assumptions, inspection cost, finish, packing, freight and lead time. Avoid counting a separately quoted setup charge twice. Ask whether taxes and outside-process charges are included and whether the quotation has a validity period tied to material or freight costs.
Compare accepted delivery quantities as well as ordered quantities. If a supplier requests an allowance for overdelivery or underdelivery, it needs explicit agreement. Keep rejected or reworked parts outside your usable-unit calculation until they are accepted. The lowest nominal unit price is not automatically the lowest cost of approved components delivered to your plant.

Check the economics of an engineering change
Before choosing the largest quantity break, ask what happens if the drawing changes after sample approval. Record which parts and stock would remain usable and whether an existing fixture still suits the new geometry. Compare the cost of buying a smaller validated batch against carrying components that may need rework. This is a purchasing risk assessment, not a predicted rejection rate. Agree whether delivery can be split and whether a split schedule changes the offer. A quotation for one shipment should not be treated as a commitment to multiple releases without the supplier accepting that arrangement.

Request a Pune-based machining review
Send the same quantity table to Precision Machining India with the intended application, required date and repeat-order forecast. Turning, 3-axis milling, shaft, tapping and engineering-plastic requirements can be reviewed against the drawing. Special tooling, outside operations and unusual inspection requirements need confirmation rather than assumptions about standard availability.
State which quantity you expect to purchase first and which figures are for planning. Ask for clarification where the offered process, inspection or freight scope differs between quantities. Release production only after the drawing revision, accepted quantity and approval requirements are recorded in the purchase order.
Frequently asked questions
Get a quote in 24hWill 100 parts always cost less per part than 10?
Not necessarily. Request a job-specific comparison covering material, setup, inspection, finishing and freight.
Are these quantities the company's minimum order quantities?
No. They are illustrative RFQ comparison quantities; accepted order quantity and charges must be confirmed in a quotation.
